Four local high school seniors received art scholarships for college from The Smith Mountain Arts Council (SMAC) Monday, May 3, at the SMAC Board meeting. A 2005 goal of SMAC is to emphasize talented area youth; ongoing goals are to introduce art to the younger generation as well as to foster in high school students an interest in the fine arts.

The Smith Mountain Arts Council is pleased to award $1000 scholarships for the pursuance of art degrees to Sara Bell and Jennifer Rogers from Staunton River High School and to Carolyn Rogers and Sheldon Johnson from Franklin County High School.

Sara Bell of Huddleston became interested in art in 9th grade. Influenced by her teachers, she may pursue an arts education degree. The Staunton River High School senior cites her art show at Roanoke College as a highlight of her year. She plans to pursue a degree in visual arts at Virginia Commonwealth University beginning next year.

Jennifer Rogers, Staunton River High School senior from Moneta, also plans to attend Virginia Commonwealth University where she will study graphic design at the school’s Art Foundation. Miss Rogers served as co-president of her high school’s art club and is proud of her first place winnings in school art shows this year.

Carolyn Rogers of Ferrum and a senior at Franklin County High School, will attend the University of the Arts in Philadelphia next year. Since becoming interested in art at the age of four, she has developed wide-ranging interest in glass blowing, painting, sculpting, and illustration.

Sheldon Johnson, a Rocky Mount senior at Franklin County High School, will attend Northwestern University’s School of Music this fall. Majoring in saxophone performance, Johnson hopes to perform and teach on the university level. Last summer he attended the Summer Music Institute at Northwestern. He also participates in the Roanoke Youth Symphony Orchestra and jazz band at Franklin County High School.

The scholarship recipients will be recognized for their awards at their respective high school awards ceremonies this month.
