The Smith Mountain Arts Council - Lake Players

"Home Games" by Tom Ziegler

When: Thursday, August 11th and Friday, August 12th at 5:30 pm
Where: Resurrection Catholic Church, Route 122, Moneta, VA

We've Come A Long Way Baby!

Considering the Lake Players group was started 16 years ago this June with a "cold turkey" reading of several articles either from a Reader's Digest magazine, a poem or an article someone thought funny, we have come a long way.

We sold out for two nights for "Home Games". The show was wonderfully funny and the acting minus books was absolutely perfect. Get it? They memorized the play! Does it get any better?

The actors Will Hockersmith, Kay DiGiorgi and Mike Dittrich were just terrific in their parts. Nancy King did a super job as director as did Penny Larsen as stage manager. And throw in at the last minute Elda Nichols at the keyboard and you've got a perfect show. What a talented group!

We hope to be able to do some more shows that are memorized but will also still do play readings for those of you that may worry that you will have to do acting without the books.

About the Play

“Take me out to the ball game”, was our presentation of “Home Games”, a romantic comedy by Tom Ziegler. Both performance nights were played to sold out crowds.

Mert, played by Kay DeGiorgi, supports her Dad, played by Will Hockersmith, and a canary and blind cat, working as a truck dispatcher. Dad was once a Yankee, spent a year on the bench and retired rather than be traded to Cleveland. He lives in a demented twilight zone, walking around in his uniform and talking to the audience as he would to Casey Stengel. Mert takes a night school class and falls in love with a successful young executive Frank, played by Mike Dittrich. Frank loves Mert but is not sure he is willing to take on dear old dad!

This was Lake Players first full fledged play, with lines memorized, rather than a play reading. It was directed by Nancy King with Penny Larsen as stage manager. The voice of Mrs. Sanchez was Joyce Dittrich.
