2010 Student Writing Contest Winners


Smith Mountain Arts Council (SMAC) is proud to announce the winners of the Lake Writers annual writing contest. The theme this year was an essay on “A Lesson Learned.”

High School Winners

For the first time, all four high school winners were from the same school, Dan River High School. Lake Writers Jim Morrison, president, Becky Mushko, vice president, and Chuck Lumpkin, SMAC represented presented checks and certificates to the winners on May 27th:

  • 1st Place: Taylor Rae Bauguess, “The Meaning of the Word ‘Father’”
  • 2nd Place: Laura Adkins, “Our Lesson Learned”
  • 3rd Place: Channing Gravely, “A Lesson Learned”
  • Honorable Mention: Lynsey Palmer, “Always Look Twice”

About the 2010 Student Writing Contest

Entry Deadline: Tuesday, March 24, 2010

Lake Writers, has announced its annual regional writing contest for middle school and high school students who reside in Franklin, Bedford and Pittsylvania counties. The contest, also open to home-schooled students in these three counties, requires a writer to write an essay about a lesson learned. Essays must be a true story about some kind of lesson learned. It may be a big or small lesson. It may have happened in or outside of school. The writer can be the participant in the lesson or an observer.

Essays must be no longer than 2,000 words. There is no minimum length.

Cash prizes will be awarded in two categories: middle school and high school. Prizes of $100 for first place, $75 for second place, $50 for third place, and $25 for honorable mention will be awarded in each of the categories.

The Lake Writers (http://www.lakewriters.webs.com/) is a group of writers from around the Smith Mountain Lake area that was founded in 2000 and meets under the auspices of The Smith Mountain Arts Council. The group includes writers of fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry. Some are published writers, and some are aspiring to getting their work published.
