The SMAC Special Events Committee has arranged for a flute/guitar recital to be presented on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at the lovely lakefront home of Will and Mary Hockersmith.
Roanoke Symphony Orchestra flutist Julee Hickcox will be joined by guitarist Mike Havens for a classical program beginning at 3:00 p.m., with an opportunity to meet the artists, socialize, and enjoy refreshments afterward.
About Julee Hickcox
Hickcox, who was born in Singapore, spent her early years in Hong Kong, and then moved to the United States with her family. She attended the North Carolina School of the Arts, where she studied flute with Philip Dunigan. She also played both flute and piccolo regularly with the NCSA Symphony in the United States and Europe and the Winston-Salem and Salisbury symphony orchestras. She is presently a member of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra (RSO), the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra and performs regularly with the orchestras of Lynchburg, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Salisbury, and the Western Piedmont Symphony, as well as for the Mill Mountain Theatre and Opera Roanoke. Ms. Hickcox currently maintains a full flute & piccolo teaching studio in Roanoke and serves as orchestra contractor for the RSO.
About Mike Havens
Havens was born in Roanoke and has been playing guitar since age 12. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in classical guitar at Radford University where he studied under Dr. Robert Trent. Upon graduation he was awarded a full scholarship for Masters’ Degree study at the University of Cincinnati’s Conservatory of Music. Mike lives in Roanoke and maintains a full schedule teaching guitar classes and electronic music at Patrick Henry High School as well as teaching private guitar lessons at Martin Music in Roanoke. He performs regularly as an acoustic and classical guitar soloist as well as with Julee Hickcox, the Con Eleganza group, and the acoustic guitar duo Entre Nous.
